This weekend, Professor Helen Kennedy of the University of Sheffield was appointed honorary doctor at Umeå University’s Faculty of Social Sciences. The award was conferred at the university’s 2024 Annual Celebration to recognize her pioneering contributions to the field of digital sociology. Greg Neely, Dean of Research at the Faculty of Social Sciences, remarked: “It’s an honor to recognize Professor Kennedy, whose trailblazing work in digital sociology and interdisciplinary research has shaped both the academic landscape and the pursuit of a more ethical and inclusive digital society. Honouring a leading scholar in this area is a way to highlight DIGSUM as a premier research hub within our faculty.” Professor Kennedy’s research spans a wide array of topics that resonate with DIGSUM. Her work has critically examined data ethics, transparency, and the sociopolitical dimensions of datafication, advocating for a more inclusive approach to digital technology. Attendees at the Saturday morning honorary lectures had the opportunity to hear her lecture titled “What Does a Good Digital Society Look Like?” where she explored themes central to her work on creating more equitable digital environments.
