DIGSUM digital sociology researcher Sam Merrill has recently published two new articles.
The first of these is "Affect and the Response to Terror: Commemoration and Communities of Sense" (Closs Stephens, Merrill et al. in International Political Sociology). The study analyses affective responses to terror in urban and digital spaces after the 2017 Manchester arena bombing.
The second is "Buffing and buffering Blu: the societal performance of street art, heritage erasure and digital preservation in Berlin" (Merrill in International Journal of Heritage Studies). This paper analyses social media responses and digital preservation practices, following the painting black of two of Berlin's most famous street art murals in 2014. Both of these studies interestingly emphasise the political intersection between digital, and highly material spaces.
