Humlab Talk: The Future of Game Culture in Society

Tuesday 28th of January 10:15-12:00 At Humlab and on Zoom (registration required for Zoom-link)

On the 28th of January, Humlab invites you to a seminar where Frans Mäyrä, Tampere University, will talk about “The Future of Game Culture in Society”.

In just a few decades, games implemented with digital devices have revolutionized how games look, what can be done within them, and what kinds of games and game genres exist, in general. Likewise, the communities and entire subcultures who have grown around games, or inhabit the shared virtual game worlds, have significantly transformed the cultural and societal status of games and play. In this talk, Frans Mäyrä explores these developmental trajectories and invites reflective speculation on the future directions of games, play, game cultures, and their societal roles, as evolving technologies, socio-cultural contexts, and global conditions continue to shape them.

Frans Mäyrä is a Professor of Information Studies and Interactive Media, with specialization in digital culture and game studies in the Tampere University, Finland. He is the founder and head of Tampere University Game Research Lab. Frans Mäyrä has studied the relationship of culture and technology from the early nineties and he has specialized in the cultural analysis of technology, particularly on the ambiguous, conflicting and heterogeneous elements in this relationship. He has published on topics that range from information technologies, science fiction and fantasy to the demonic tradition, the concept of identity and role-playing games. He is currently teaching, researching and heading numerous research projects in the study and development of games, interactive media and digital culture.
