Save the date: DIGSUM symposium on digital methods 11-12 September

The DIGSUM Centre for Digital Social Research at Umeå University invites everyone interested to a 2-day symposium to discuss, apply and critique methods for analysing societal entanglements and consequences of digital technology.

SAVE THE DATES: 11-12 September 2024 at Umeå University

The symposium titled Researching the Digital: Methods, Mess, Myths, Madness promises to be an equally fun and important event, bringing together scholars from various disciplines to delve into the complexities of analysing digital technology's impact on society.

The 2-day (actually 1.5 day) event is designed as a collaborative space for sharing, learning, and challenging the conventional wisdom around digital research methodologies.

KEY THEMES

Methods: The core focus will be on the methodologies used in digital research. This encompasses a wide range of approaches - from qualitative and quantitative methods to mixed methods, computational techniques, and beyond.

Mess: The digital realm is inherently messy, characterized by vastness, variability, and a rapid pace of change. During this event, we will looking at how researchers can navigate the messiness, find patterns in the chaos, and derive meaningful insights from challenging data sources.

Myths: There are numerous myths surrounding digital technology and its societal impact. Similarly, there are many myths about digital research methods in terms of their application, orthodoxy, and potentials. We hope, during the symposium, to try to debunk some of these.

Madness: Doing research and scholarship in times of rapid technological and societal transformation can be both an exhilarating and a daunting experience. To avoid being overwhelmed, events such as these are crucial for providing a sense of community and shared purpose among researchers, offering the opportunity to share experiences and strategies.
